The Internal workshop of the agriculture coalition on September 9th 2015

On September 9th 2015, The Agriculture Coalition organized an internal workshop to give feedback on the draft reports studying on debts in ethnic minority areas and prepare for organizing Vietnam Agriculture Policy Forum 2015, which is expected to be held in November, 2015

Presenting at the workshop was the members of the Agriculture Coalition, including Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh – the Director and Chief Economist of Vietnam Institute for Economic and Policy Research (VEPR), Dr. Nguyen Van Giap – the Director of Southern Center of Agricultural Policies and Strategy (SCAP), and other representatives from The Institute for Studies of Society, Economics and Environment (iSEE), and PHANO. The workshop also attracted representatives from Oxfam, the sponsor of Coalition Program including the Agriculture Coalition.

The workshop marked the participation of three new members of the Agriculture Coalition, including Dr. Le Duc Thinh – Deputy Director of Department of Cooperatives and Rural Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development; Assoc. Prof. Dr Chu Tien Quang – Central Institute for Economic Management and Assoc. Prof. Dr Vu Trong Khai – former president of College of Management for Agriculture and Rural Development 2 in Ho Chi Minh city, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Dr. Hoang Cam representing the team studying on debts in ethnic minority areas presented the preliminary results of their research, which was conducted by iSEE and SCAP. The team believed that it was necessary to change views on goods production in mountainous areas, encourage and support the trend of more sustainable production.

Dr. Le Duc Thinh appreciated the findings of the study, but he thought that expanding larger samples to increase the generalization of the study would be of importance. While Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh believed that it was also necessary to combine more economic, financial knowledge to demonstrate the problems of debts in rural areas, concretizing the results of qualitative research.

In the second part, the members of the Agriculture Coalition evaluated the activities of Vietnam Agriculture Policy Forum (VAPF), along with discussing on organizing the Vietnam Agriculture Policy Forum in November, 2015. The members also discussed other administrative issues of the Coalition, such as increasing the number of members, organizing events, cooperating among members of the Coalition in term of research…
